Wake County Justice Center

Print

CGL began assisting Wake County in 1999 to look at the 30-year needs of their criminal justice facilities. Over a 10-year period, CGL did numerous needs assessments and updates for the new courthouse and detention center expansions. Additional projects included planning for traffic courts, public safety center, health and human services department, and developing a reuse plan for the original public safety facility to be converted to civil and family court space, and a space reuse study for the Akins administrative building.

The new Wake County Justice Center efficiently accommodates the growth in the County and the increased daily traffic in the court system and other public records operations. The Justice Center has the capacity for 22 criminal courtrooms equipped with state-of-the-art technology, as well as more space for court support, such as the Clerk of Court and Public Defender. The Justice Center increases access to public records, including the Register of Deeds, Geographic Information Services mapping and Revenue/Property Assessment information. The Center also includes a County Commissioners’ Meeting Room and County administrative offices that are open to the public. The new Justice Center and the Davie Street parking decks provide space for 1,160 vehicles.

The Wake County Justice Center features significant upgrades in both technology and security. Security features include: secure corridors under constant control, x-ray security screening, metal detectors, trained staff on post, camera systems monitoring the building, weapons checks, emergency duress buttons and card access control.

The Justice Center houses all criminal courtrooms, allowing for the public and inmates to be kept separate at all times. The center features improved elevator systems that provide improved movement for court officials, staff and the general public. The inmate population can be moved without interaction with the general public, court officials or staff. A total of 17 elevators are included. In addition, escalators provide access between floors 1-3.
