Richard B. Russell Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse

The Richard B. Russell Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse project is an outstanding example of GSA’s initiative to renew its stock of older buildings. With a public image that had deteriorated under the stress of security adaptations, hard use, and evolving philosophy about the role of public buildings, the building was primed for a transformation in its image and function.

Our firm was responsible for courtroom design on the project. The renovation added a new entry security screening pavilion and completely refurbished district courtrooms; including their waiting areas and elevator lobbies as the most visible elements of an overall modernization of the large ’60s-era tower.

The new entry pavilion is spacious, open, and inviting, yet provides state of the art resistance to possible security threats. The new courtrooms provide current accessibility, technology, and functional capabilities, as well as an image more befitting the prestige and stature of the courts.
