Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse
Our Expertise
A massive midcentury modern structure, the 736,000-square-foot Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse required major modernization and repurposing. Our firm served as courts planning and design associate architect to the lead architect in the update of this important civic structure. The renovations upgraded the energy performance, water tightness and security features of the building; updated technology capabilities; reorganized space use; and provided a new courtroom. Our firm helped develop a series of options that satisfied the court’s and marshal’s operational needs while allowing phased construction in the fully-occupied courthouse.
Funded as part of the ARRA stimulus projects, the $275-million project was required to have the first phase – the renovation of the courthouse – completed design and out to bid within four months of the start of design. The team was able to achieve this accelerated schedule within the context of the Design Excellence process.
The Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana’ole Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse is a LEED Silver Design.
