Utah’s new prison is scheduled to open near the Salt Lake Airport in 2020. The new facility’s design is expected to focus on creating a humane, rehabilitative environment whose appearance, programs, and operations will differ greatly from the current state prison in Draper.

Utah-based news organization The Deseret News spoke with members of the new prison’s planning and design teams, including Executive Vice President Stephen A. Carter, AICP, about the “cutting edge” design of the new facility, how it furthers the state’s Justice Reinvestment Initiative, and its relation to similar design efforts in the United States and internationally.
