Unit Management: Built on Principles of Security, Accountability, and Teamwork

When I first started writing on the topic of unit management, I planned on two blog posts: Part One, “The Guiding Principles of Unit Management,” covered the history of unit management and the guiding principles behind it. My second post, “Unit Management Pt. 2: Strategies for Successful Implementation,” laid out what belongs in an effective unit plan, why training is not optional, and which performance indicators to track. The conversations those two posts started with wardens, jail administrators, and agency directors around the country convinced me there was more worth saying.

The questions I get asked most often are not about mechanics. They are about readiness and fit:

• Is my system actually built for this?
• What do I do with populations that need something other than general housing?
• And can any of this help solve the problem keeping me up at night: how do I keep the staff I have?
